Neuropathy Q & A

What is neuropathy?

Neuropathy results from nerve damage and, for years, has been a figurative death sentence for many patients. It can cause unpleasant symptoms like chronic pain. Several types of it exist, including diabetic peripheral and vascular neuropathies. Regardless of the type you have, treatment with Dr. Mukalel can offer you relief.

What are the symptoms of it?

The symptoms you experience with peripheral vary by the type and severity of your condition. You might notice:

  • Chronic pain
  • Numbness
  • Prickling
  • Tingling
  • Burning pain
  • Muscle weakness
  • Sharp, throbbing, or jabbing pain
  • Lack of coordination or falling
  • Extreme touch sensitivity
  • Feeling like you’re wearing socks or gloves

At the first sign of it, see Dr. Mukalel for evaluation and treatment.

What are the risk factors for it?

Diabetes is the leading cause of it in the United States. Other factors that increase your risk include alcohol abuse, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, infections, autoimmune diseases, and kidney, thyroid, or liver disorders. Toxin exposure, family history of it, and repetitive motions also boost your risk of it.

How is neuropathy diagnosed?

To diagnose neuropathy and determine which treatment is right for you, Dr. Mukalel reviews your medical history and asks about your symptoms. He completes a neurological examination and might recommend blood tests, nerve function tests, imaging procedures, or nerve or skin biopsies. Skin biopsies help diagnose small fiber peripheral neuropathy.

How is neuropathy treated?

Providers commonly treat it with certain medications like Lyrica®, gabapentin, or anti-seizure medications, which most patients don’t tolerate well. Dr. Mukalel specializes in targeted stimulation therapies like radiofrequency ablation and spinal cord stimulation. These treatments use electrical energy to block pain signals in your brain.

Studies show that recent technological advances, including dorsal root ganglion (DRG) spinal cord stimulation, are effective treatments for peripheral and vascular neuropathies. Dr. Mukalel also offers infusion therapy to treat metabolic neuropathies. After these treatments, many patients can stop taking pain medications.

Don’t live with neuropathy pain or take addictive pain medicine when numerous noninvasive treatments are within reach. Contact Jessen Mukalel, MD, by phone or online for its relief today.
